Can you wear compression stockings at night?

Can you wear compression stockings at night?

The short answer is no, at least for high-level compression garments over 30mmHg, unless you have been instructed to do so by your doctor. Lighter compression garments like anti-embolism stockings can be worn at night, as well as mild compression of 8-15mmHg. If you need compression round the clock, your doctor or therapist will probably recommend a different type of compression garment when you sleep, like bandaging or a nightwear garment.

Short stretch bandaging or wrapping is often worn at night by individuals who have lymphedema or chronic edema. This type of compression is very mild when resting. The bandage only provides resistance and significant compression when the underlying muscles are active and pushing against the bandage.

A compression foam sleeve nightwear garment is one of the most comfortable and effective ways to manage edema at night. There are various benefits to wearing nightwear garments:

  • Cuts down on bandaging time.
  • Continued treatment and swelling reduction throughout the night.
  • Can help ease the application of daytime garments.
  • Better quality of sleep

When Nighttime Compression Might Be Useful

Nighttime compression may be recommended in specific scenarios, including:

  • Venous Ulcer Healing or Post-Vein Treatment, such as RF ablation, or phlebectomy. Some studies have found that short-term overnight use (1–13 weeks) could aid healing.

  • Lymphedema or Chronic Edema: Continuous compression, especially in early treatment or when swelling persists, may be valuable.
  • Post-Surgical or Postoperative Care: Specialized garments like anti-embolism stockings or foam-based Tribute or Profile garments may be used overnight under medical guidance to prevent clot formation or assist recovery.
  • Athletic Recovery: Some athletes use light overnight compression to reduce inflammation and boost recovery—though comfort and fit must be prioritized.

Let's look at our selection of nighttime garments more closely.

The circaid® profile is a foam sleeve designed to be used at night or for anyone experiencing sensitivity issues. It is made with first-use foam for hygienic confidence, and brrr®cooling fabric proven to help keep you cooler during nighttime lymphedema management. Directional channels filled with engineered foam move lymph fluid, creating a massaging effect that promotes airflow. EZ-on tabs are included for effortless donning. The profile is available in arm sleeves with or without hands, as well as lower and whole leg offerings, and is available in 16 sizes and two lengths.

Tribute Wrap from the Solaris Collection by L&R USA is an off-the-shelf nighttime foam gradient compression garment. While specifically designed for nighttime wear, it can also be used during the evening or other times of low activity. First-use chipped foam creates pressure differentials and promotes a micro-massage effect to break up and soften hardened skin or fibrotic tissue, supporting skin health. Innovative Coolcore® interior fabric provides chemical-free Cooling Power, which rapidly wicks away sweat and moisture to regulate body temperature. The Tribute Wrap is available in a variety of styles and can be machine-washed and dried.

Juzo Night is the perfect complement to circular and flat knit compression garments worn during the day. The foam sleeve is lightweight, comfortable, and removable fasteners make it easy to put on and take off. Cooling material wicks moisture and reduces sweating, while foam channels help promote lymphatic drainage. The anatomical angle of the Juzo Night garment prevents bunching and irritation. Juzo Night is available as a sleeve with left or right arm options, two lengths, and can be machine-washed and dried.

Sigvaris Chipsleeve garments are made for upper and lower extremities. Filled with chipped foam and designed with directional channels to aid in the direction and movement of fluid. Each garment works to efficiently direct lymph fluid and promote drainage. Fabric used in the construction of the chipsleeves is moisture-wicking and includes odor control properties.

Before beginning any nighttime compression regimen, be sure to consult with your doctor or therapist.
