Help prevent blood clots in the legs -- "economy class syndrome."

Economy class syndrome is the popular name for the serious medical condition deep vein thrombosis (usually abbreviated as DVT). It became known as "economy class syndrome" because of the cramped coach seating on airlines which when combined with long periods of inactivity can sometimes cause blood clots to form deep in the legs.

Medical studies have shown that these clots are extremely dangerous. However, studies also show that gradient compression hosiery (support stockings) can improve circulation in the legs and reduce the chance of developing DVT.

No matter how healthy you are, when you are passively seated in a plane, a car, or even at a desk, long periods of inactivity during which the leg muscles are not moved can lead to blood pooling in the legs. This causes swelling and discomfort and may even lead to the formation of blood clots in veins deep inside the legs. When activity resumes, a blood clot can move to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism.

Some people are at greater risk of developing DVT than others. According to the American Heart Association, DVT occurs in an estimated two million Americans each year. Chronic heart disease, varicose veins, pregnancy, obesity, use of hormone medications, and recent surgery are among the medical conditions that indicate a greater chance of DVT.

It's not just long flights either. Anyone who spends long periods of time in passive sitting can be at risk. You can reduce the risk by wearing compression stockings. Compression therapy will help your legs feel energized and reduce swelling in the legs and feet. It's one of the simplest things you can do to prevent DVT.
