Alternatives to wearing Compression Stockings

December 2nd, 2011

Many individuals can’t or won’t wear compression stockings because they can’t get them on. This is especially true with patients who have more advanced disease and require higher levels of compression.

Farrow Medical, Solaris, and CircAid all make ready-to-wear WRAPS that will fit, and can be donned by almost anyone.

FarrowWrap for the calf and foot, is made out of strips of short-stretch fabric, with Velcro closures.  A liner stocking is typically donned first, then the strips are folded over in sequence starting at the ankle.  A  wrap for the foot, and hybrid liner with compression in the foot only are also available.  FarrowWrap is available in two compression levels, Lite (20-30mmHg) and Classic (30-40mmHg).

ReadyWrap Quick-Fit by Solaris mimics traditional bandaging and is made using non-elastic Velcro straps.  ReadyWrap is available for the foot, calf, knee and thigh.  Pieces can be worn individually or together to provide compression from the toes to the groin.

Juxta Lite by CircAid provides dynamic compression, is inelastic, and can be worn day and night.  Compression increases when you are active and decreases when you’re at rest.  A Built-In Pressure System (BPS) can be adjusted to provide 20-30, 30-40, or 40-50mmHg.

If one of these ready-to-wear options won’t work for you, custom wraps are available for every part of the body.  Give us a call at 1-877-545-8585.

Gee Your Feet Smell Horrific!

October 20th, 2011

Have you ever found yourself in the same room with a pair of unpleasantly smelly feet?  Yuck.  Were the feet yours? Double yuck.  Make note, BrightLife Direct has socks that will tame even the most odoriferous feet.

Foot odor is created by bacterial toxins that thrive in warm, moist, confined conditions, like sweaty socks.  Did you know there are 250,000 sweat glands in your feet?  More than any other part of your body!  Socks obviously come in direct contact with your feet and the fiber composition of a sock can have a direct effect on foot odor.  Synthetic fibers like nylon and spandex can restrict ventilation making the foot warmer and wetter.  Natural fibers like cotton and wool provide greater air flow, but all compression stockings must have some synthetic fibers to provide the needed compression.

Two great solutions for your little stinkers are our Juzo Silver Sole socks and our new Aetrex Copper Sole socks.  Silver and copper have natural anti-microbial properties that kill off the bacteria at the root of the problem.  Aetrex copper socks are relatively new to BrightLife Direct.  In addition to Aetrex compression, we sell their non-binding cushioned diabetic socks, and their athletic socks with cushioned feet and arch support.

As of this writing we have not received any Aetrex customer reviews, but our staff loves them!

Dream In Color

October 6th, 2011

As summer fades into fall, leaves begin to change color, and so do the Juzo DreamSleeves and Juzo Soft compression stockings.

When Juzo started their seasonal “dream color” series it was only available in armsleeves and gloves for patients with lymphedema. This year they have added the color options to their “Soft 2000” line of compression knee highs, thigh highs, and leggings.  Sometimes things do change for the better.  Our customers are wearing color like never before.

Please take a look at the 2011 fall colors: Pink, Cranberry, Blueberry, Plum, Chocolate, Cayenne and Jade.  Beige, Black, White, Cinnamon and Chestnut are available year-round.

Is there compression in the feet of my stockings?

October 1st, 2011

Many people assume there is compression in the foot of compression stockings.  Generally, this is not true.  The foot portion of compression stockings may feel snug, especially if you have large feet, but it does not have medical compression.  Compression begins at the ankle in almost all ready-to-wear compression stockings, with one exception.

The Juzo Dynamic (Varin) Neuropathic provides 30-40mmHg with increased compression beginning at the metatarsals.  The metatarsals are the five long bones that connect your toes to the middle bones of your foot.  Varin Neuropathic stockings are available in knee high and thigh high styles, in regular and short lengths,  with an open or closed toe.  They come in beige, black, or chestnut.  Designed with a very soft inside, Varin Neuropathic are ideal for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy.

Compression Stockings For Large Legs

September 14th, 2011

If you have large legs finding compression stockings that fit well can be a challenge.  For people with cone shaped legs, rolling and sliding is often a problem.  There are solutions for both of these issues.

Most manufacturers now make wide-calf styles.  Jobst Full-Calf sizes are designed to fit a calf circumference of 18-24”and an ankle up to 14”.  These sizes are available in Jobst for Men Casual, Jobst ActiveWear, Jobst Relief, and Jobst UltraSheer in 15-20, 20-30, and 30-40mmHg.  Full-Calf sizes are available in Jobst Opaque 20-30mmHg and higher.

Mediven Extra-Wide Calf sizes are available in Medi Plus, Medi Comfort,  Mediven for Men, Medi Assure and Mediven Forte, 20-30mmHg and higher.  Medi Extra-Wide calf sizes vary by size, so be sure to check the specific size chart for the stocking you want.

Allegro Surgical Weight Knee Highs 20-30mmHg are available in Wide-Calf sizes that fit a calf circumference up to 26” and an ankle up to 15.5”.  The Surgical Thigh High and Allegro Sheer Thigh Highs are sized up to XXX-Large to fit a 15.5” ankle and 36” thigh.

None of the manufacturers make ready-to-wear thigh highs or pantyhose in wide-calf sizes.

If your leg is cone shaped, compression knee highs have a tendency to roll or slide.  A silicone top-band will typically solve this problem.  Silicone top-bands are available on Jobst Relief, Mediven Plus, Mediven Forte, Juzo Soft 2000, Juzo Varin and Sigvaris 860 Select Comfort in compressions of 20-30mmHg and higher.

There aren’t any silicone topped knee highs available in 15-20mmHg or below, so we recommend using skin glue.  It Stays is a water soluble skin glue that is hypo-allergenic and safe for all compression stockings.  It’s available in a 2oz roll-on bottle.   A dab or two of It Stays will keep your knee highs and thigh highs up all day.

Great Italian Compression Socks – A Short Story

August 29th, 2011

Several years ago Peter Smiley, co-founder of BrightLife Direct, and I took a tour of compression hosiery mills in Europe.  We heard about a small manufacturer in Northern Italy that was making a sock which had become a big hit in Europe.  We found the small family-owned factory in the snowy foothills of the Alps and were shown their famous knee high sock.  It was love at first wearing.  A compression sock with a casual and airy softness and a classically elegant look.

The sock has a terrifically soft hand, is ultra-stretchy, lightly ribbed and has a one inch top hem that stretches to almost twice its flat size.  It is woven with a blend of top-grade cotton, each strand wrapped with amazingly resilient European fibers to hold compression.  Even with the socks’ success in Europe, it had never been distributed in the United States.  We pounced.

BrightLife Direct began to sell the Allegro Italian Cotton Sock for women on our web site in 2007.  The reviews were overwhelmingly positive.  In response to your requests, we added larger sizes for men and more colors. We now have five “unisex” sizes and five color options.  This original sock was offered in a moderate 15-20mmHg graduated compression and we named it “The Swing”.

Soon we began receiving requests for the same sock in a higher compression.  Back to Italy we go (feeling sorry for us is not obligatory) with marching orders for a 20-25mmHg firm version which BrightLife Direct would name “The Samba”.  We introduced “The Samba” in 2009 in the same five unisex sizes and colors that we offered with “The Swing”.  To date, this is the best-selling compression product in our catalog.

In January, 2011 BrightLife Direct introduced “The Paso Doble” to our Italian cotton series. “The Paso Doble” is a very firm 25-30mmHg for our customers whose condition or swelling requires even more graduated compression.

What Is Microfiber?

July 8th, 2011

Microfiber is a synthetic fiber, usually polyester or nylon, that is less than one denier in thickness.  What’s a denier you ask?  Denier is a measure of linear density.  A 1 denier filament that is 9,000 meters long (approx 5.6 miles) weighs one gram, or .03 ounces.

Extremely soft and elastic, microfibers are also very durable and stain resistant.  They wick moisture away from the skin, keeping the wearer cool and dry.

Microfibers are used to make cleaning products, insulation, basketballs, car interiors, and when twisted together, they form yarns that can be woven into textiles and clothing like the new Allegro Jazz and Rumba series of compression stockings.

In the Jazz series, microfibers are combined with cotton and spandex to make a luxuriously soft men’s support dress sock. Available in two compression levels and four colors.

The Rumba series consists of a closed toe 15-20mmHg knee high, an open toe/heel support knee high 20-30mmHg, and an 18-24mmHg compression leg sleeve.

Life the fabric itself, you’ll get miles and miles of wear out of the new Microfiber stockings from Allegro.
