Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition affecting the foot. The most common symptom is sharp heel pain, making it difficult to walk or stand. The tissue runs across the bottom of the foot and connects the heel to the area just behind the toes becomes inflamed. This can be caused by flat feet, high arches or an impact injury. Lack of calf muscle tone can also cause plantar fasciitis pain. It is also common among people with a high body mass index. Calcium deposits may form on the heel bone, causing pain when pressure is applied. The condition can be temporary or chronic.
